Last year, I helped to organize the South Asian Journalists’ Association’s convention at Columbia University. Tonight, I became a member of the group’s board. I’m thrilled to be in a position to give back to the journalistic community that has helped me so much. I realize that may sound trite, but SAJA leaders reached out to me when I was a college student and made me feel at home for the first time in a South Asian organization. That means a lot to me.
I also think it’s important that SAJA have a Sri Lankan board member, especially now. Of course, most of SAJA’s members are of Indian descent, but I appreciate the group’s emphasis on connections within the region. I’m also happy to advocate for Sri Lankan elements to be included in SAJA events. And I hope our membership expands to include more members from South Asia’s smaller countries!
